Semester Final Exam Part 3

The photo above shows leading lines. The lines on the racetrack take you all the way from the left and lead you to the finish along with Usain Bolt.  Another great factor that made this photo was the looks of struggle in all of their faces.
This photo above shows framing. The walls of leaves help isolate the subject away from anything else. The man is made easier to see because of these frames of leaves.
The photo above is a good example of rule of thirds. Mitt Romney is put in the bottom right corner, which is where I imagine the 9 even squares cut. He is placed directly where they intersect making me look at him.
This photo here shows good balance to me. The people on the left balance out the people on the right and vice versa. Also the dog (subject) in the middle is made easier to find because of this balance.

Semester Final Exam Part 2

"Gunman Killed"
Marcellus Wallace lays dead after being shot in his own car. Police later found out that Wallace was involved in a drug ring, the probable cause of the shooting.

"Governor Versus President"
Governor of Virginia, Selena Gomez, angrily fires hard tactics at the president about his standpoints with Egypt. There is an expected heated debate between the two tonight at 8 on NBC.

"Monk Protests"
A Buddhist monk willingly sets himself on fire for the protests in India. These protests have been going on for over three decades discussing the issue between coffee and donuts.

Terms

Exposure- the quantity of light reaching a photographic film. Measured in lux seconds
DOF- the range of distance that appears very sharp
Focal Length- The focal length of a lens determines its angle of view, and thus also how much the subject will be magnified for a given photographic position

Types of Self Portraits

Environmental- using backgrounds and other elements in your own self portrait
Self- its just you in the photo
Casual- just an everyday pose usually not looking at the camera

Acceptable/ Non-Acceptable Photoshop

Acceptable photoshop is very similar to the original, while unacceptable photoshop would just have to be ridiculously off

How To Get To My Folder

- click 'Journalisim Drive'
- select 'photoj'
- username "photoj" password "password"
- "1st Period"
- find the name you need

Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO

Aperture- determines the size of the hole that allows the amount of light to get through. The larger the hole, the more the light. Measured in f-stops. If the aperture is small, the Depth Of Field is large.

Shutter Speed- this is the length of time that the camera allows light to go through. Slow speeds allow more light and are used for low-light/ night photography to let more light in. Faster speeds help freeze motion

ISO- level of sensitivity of the camera to the light. Measured in numbers, the lower the number represents lower sensitivity to available light, higher numbers mean its more sensitive

10 Rules

1. Rule of thirds- Imagine the photo chopped into 9 even pieces, make the subject of the photo where the lines intersect
2. Balancing Elements- balance the 'weight' of your photo with another element
3. Leading Lines- this kind of element gives you somewhat of a 'journey' in the photo
4. Symmetry and Patterns (repetition)- repeating a pattern
5. Viewpoint- use different perspectives to take the photo
6. Background- either a busy or calm one, control the background
7. Create depth- include objects in the front, middle, and background
8. Framing- use objects to isolate a subject
9. Cropping- get the viewer's attention by focusing on the small part
10. Mergers and avoiding them- don't distract the viewer with other objects, isolate the subject

My Self Portrait-Questions

I will shoot photos of anyone with me including myself. I'll shoot anywhere that has reflective surfaces and by walls, i'll check the amount of light i have and set the shutter speed, ISO, and aperture levels.

2 Phot. Self Portraits

I chose these because they provide a different perspective of a camera shot.

2 Formal Portraits

I chose these because they look organized and cleanly taken.

2 Casual Portraits

I chose these because they're smiling.

2 Env. Portraits

I chose these two because there's another story going on in the background behind them.

Settings

F4- 1/125 sec/ The background is not very visible
F5.6- 1/60 sec/ The background is sort of visible
F8- 1/60 sec/ The background becoming more visible
F11- 1/60 sec/ The background looks the same as the last setting
F16- 1/30 sec/ The background is visible.
F22- 1/8 sec/ The background is completely visible.

At slower shutter speeds, the subject(people) gets more blurry. To fix this, the photographer could make the shutter speed faster. The lowest shutter speed that can be held is probably around 1/15 sec.

ISO Questions

1.) You could capture al the action faster with a higher ISO in a football game.
2.) The author suggested that you should use low ISO when there's plenty of light.
3.) The author suggested that you use high ISO when there's not enough light and you need to capture motion quickly.

My Flood Story

Well, my house is on top of a giant hill so we fortunately didn't get flooded. I have seen then house at the bottom, and it doesn't look good at all. I've seen all of the people's furniture and clothes outside and it just sucks.. I don't know what i'd do if i was in their situation.

My Room

My room at home is usually pretty clean, but the days i go hang out with friends/ go out, it's pretty dirty. Overall, B+.  I'm most proud of my huge posters on the wall of Scarface. There's a futon in there too.

Great Black and White Photographers Part 3

- One thing that caught my eye about these photos was the way they provide a different perspective to small things. Just the way they portrayed things, like the man with no head, or Old Faithful.
- I see a man without a head in the reflection.
- I smell dust bunnies from the older jacket he's wearing.
- I hear emptiness in the room where he stands.
- I taste dust floating in the air.
- I feel the frame of the picture behind him.

I'd like to share a powerpoint rather than a poster. Electronics, woooooooo.

Mural

Something that i think would be cool would be if we got a huge eagle and then decorated it with the school colors and just pictures throughout the school displaying what we do here. The bigger, the better.

Quick Write 10/17

I like these photos a bit more than the ones by Nick Brandt. They pop out to me unlike the other ones, plus these photos provide more color.

Casey Catelli Story

A theme I could create would be our constant school spirit even though i'm new here. There's a lot of pride in this school for some reason. This theme shows that art deserves to be everywhere and other students care because they like nice looking things like these to be up and in our world. Advantages would be being able to share it instantly with others around the world. A disadvantage would be not getting the best quality on the camera. Advantages of SLR would be the photo would look fantastic. A disadvantage would be not being able to share it as fast.

Africa

This photo just reminds me of the crazy looking animals we have and I like how they're all marching in one line. Rule of thirds is present here, lining them up from the bottom left to the right. He uses a Pentax 67II with only two fixed lenses. His goal was to memorialize the vanishing natural grandeur of East Africa. His hope was to capture the animals in their habitat and get closer to get a sense of their spirit. "The photos are my elegy to these beautiful creatures, to this wrenchingly beautiful world that is steadily, tragically vanishing before our eyes."

Reaction to Africa

The pictures make me realize what kinds of crazy animals we have on this planet, but don't get to see everyday. It provides a majestic feeling.
